As a Transit Operator, you will safely transport passengers throughout Duke's service areas while maintaining the highest standards of safety, customer service, and compliance. This role requires sound judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to providing a welcoming and secure environment for all passengers.

What You'll Do:

Provide Safe and Reliable Transportation
  • Operate transit vehicles safely and professionally while adhering to established routes and schedules.
  • Follow all federal, state, local, and University traffic laws, safety regulations, and departmental policies.
  • Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Ensure the safe transportation of students, employees, patients, visitors, and other passengers.
  • Operate vehicles during varying hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and other times based on service needs.
Deliver Outstanding Customer Service
  • Maintain a courteous, patient, and helpful demeanor when interacting with passengers.
  • Assist passengers as needed to ensure a safe and comfortable riding experience.
  • Answer questions regarding routes, service areas, fares, eligibility requirements, and transit services.
  • Promote a welcoming and inclusive environment for all riders.
Support Transit Operations
  • Follow dispatch instructions and exercise sound judgment when adjusting routes or responding to service needs.
  • Coordinate efficient passenger pick-up and drop-off activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of assigned routes, transfer locations, service areas, and roadway conditions.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with transit systems, vehicle operations, and safety features.
Respond to Incidents and Emergencies
  • Receive and transmit authorized two-way radio communications regarding accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activity, and operational matters.
  • Exercise discretion and good judgment to protect passenger and public safety.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and service disruptions in accordance with departmental procedures.
Complete Documentation and Regulatory Requirements
  • Accurately complete manifests, inspection reports, accident reports, incident documentation, and other required operational records.
  • Prepare written reports regarding accidents, breakdowns, mechanical defects, incidents, and service interruptions.
  • Maintain compliance with all federal transit requirements and established operating procedures.
  • Ensure all required records are completed accurately and submitted timely.
Participate in Training and Development
  • Successfully complete required training programs and certifications.
  • Maintain knowledge of transit regulations, service operations, safety procedures, and customer service standards.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities to support operational excellence.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and operational objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

  • Minimum of one year of experience operating public transportation vehicles, heavy trucks, buses, or other commercial/heavy vehicles required.
  • Experience providing service to the public in a transportation or customer-facing environment preferred.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements required.
  • Must maintain all required licenses and certifications throughout employment.
